Robyn and Betsy are looking to make their home a bit more cohesive, while adding color, texture and warmth.
They also mentioned that they would like to lean towards a “modern farmhouse” look.
As you enter through the front door, you are greeted by a cathedral height wall, with a gorgeous stacked stone fireplace. This room is what they refer to as the den.
The staircase in on the right wall of the den, adding dimension to the room, but can also be an awkward wall for furniture placement.
On the left wall, as you enter the front door, is a foyer wall.
Betsy and Robyn enjoy the North Georgia Mountains. With that and one of their photos of the mountains as my inspiration, I propose that we paint the fireplace wall in the den the warm autumn shade of Red Cent. Adding texture to the space, I would use grass cloth wallcovering on the foyer wall, and possibly the loveseat/staircase wall. I would also add a large round interesting mirror on the foyer wall.
I would also recommend, we paint the additional walls the color of toasted oats.
To add color, I would recommend refinishing the bookshelf and coffee table in a distressed blue. Not only adding color, but again, adding texture.
We would replace the reclining loveseat with two neutral shade recliners, and on the staircase wall, a love seat that falls into our autumnal color palette.
The rug would also incorporate the colors of the walls, bringing in the colors of autumn in the mountains. We would also bring in texture with the lighting, and interest with the side tables.
One of the challenges of their floorplan, is the keeping room/breakfast area. With the beautiful fireplace in the keeping room, combined with the small size of the keeping room, it is difficult to place furniture in the space. The breakfast area is a combination of breakfast area and back door space.
I propose that we transform the keeping room into a casual eating area, by adding a round or oval dining table and chairs in that space. Again, I would suggest the finish on the table to be in a distressed blue, along with four of the chairs, I recommend two chairs to be upholstered pieces, adding another element of shape and texture.
We would add a storage cabinet under the window in the current breakfast area, removing the hanging light fixture and replacing it with a ceiling fan. Also adding a pet friendly rug, that coordinates with the rugs in the other areas of the house. This would be designated as the back door area, no longer an eating area.
We would use the same paint colors in this area, as we have used in the Den and Foyer.
The kitchen will be a fairly easy to refresh.
I would refinish the center island in the same shade of blue, used on the den and eating/keeping room pieces, adding a removable “lid” or “box top made of distressed wood with a whitewashed finish. This would cover the granite, adding a custom element to the kitchen with modern farmhouse feel, but not permanently removing the granite.
We would remove the existing curtains throughout the space, replacing them with custom Roman Shades, chosen from the fabrics on the coordinating “Carry Along Board,” made specifically for Robyn and Betsy.
